A local Confucian school, called hyanggyo in Korean, is a public education institution of the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods. Such schools were established in jurisdictions across the country to serve as a local shrine for Confucius and to promote Confucian education and nurture local elites. Students learned about poetry composition, Confucian Classics, and history.

향교는 고려시대와 조선시대의 국립교육기관이다. 이러한 향교들은 전국 각 지역에 설립되어 공자를 모시는 지역 사당의 역할을 하며, 유학을 교육하고 지역의 인재를 양성하는 데 기여하였다. 학생들은 시를 짓는 법과 유교의 경전과 역사를 배웠다.
