Yun came across this scenic forest area in 1640, at the age of 54, after having seen it in a dream in which he was given a stone box with a golden padlock. He therefore named the area "Geumswedong (金鎖洞)," literally meaning "Golden Lock Village," and had a number of buildings constructed here. A 2015 archaeological excavation revealed the exact location, size, and shape of the various buildings of this historic site, which had long been unknown.

Historic Site Related to Yun Seon-do, Haenam

This historic site, known as Geumswedong, was one of multiple residences of Yun Seon-do in the Haenam area. The site is located within the premises of Hyeonsangoseong Mountain Fortress, believed to have been constructed in the Goryeo period (918-1392).

Yun Seon-do (1587-1671; pen names: Gosan, Haeong) was a civil official and poet of the mid-Joseon period. Born in the capital, Hanyang (present-day Seoul), he placed first in the primary state examination at the age of 26 and began work as a civil official. At the age of 31, he was exiled to Hamgyeong-do Province after criticizing the government. After release from exile at age 37, he went on to become the royal tutor of two princes at the age of 42. When he was 51, Yun retired to the Haenam area, where he continued to live until his death at age 85 (apart from some temporary exiles to other regions of Korea). Yun is considered the greatest master of sijo poetry, and his most famous sijo composition is The Fisherman's Calendar (Eobusasisa).

During his stay at Geumswedong, Yun produced such literary works as The Records of Geumswedong (Geumswedonggi), A Collection of Antiquities at Geumswedong (Geumswedong jipgo), and New Songs of the Mountain (Sanjungsingok).
