- The Four Guardian Kings are ancient Indian deities who took on the role of protecting the Buddha and his teachings by watching over the four cardinal directions from atop Mount Meru. Large statues of the Four Guardian Kings can be found inside Cheonwangmun Gate, which is one of the gates along the path leading to the main worship area of a Buddhist temple.
- 사천왕은 원래 고대 인도의 신이었으나, 불교에 귀의한 후 수미산 중턱에서 동서남북의 네 방향을 지키며 부처님과 부처님의 가르침을 수호하게 되었다. 사천왕상은 사찰의 중심영역으로 진입하는 문 중 하나인 천왕문에 모셔진다.
