고인돌/지석묘 dolmen

  • A dolmen is a megalithic monument constructed during the Bronze Age (1500-300 BCE). Dolmens are found in parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia. The Korean Peninsula has the largest concentration of dolmens in the world.
    • 고인돌은 청동기 시대의 대표적인 거석 구조물이다. 고인돌은 유럽, 아프리카, 아시아 등에 분포하고 있는데, 한반도는 세계에서 가장 집중적으로 분포된 지역이다.
  • Dolmens in Korea can be categorized into three types: table type, Go board type, and unsupported-capstone type. A table-type dolmen consists of a wide, flat capstone placed atop upright stone slabs to create an above-ground burial chamber, while a Go board-type dolmen consists of a wide, flat capstone placed atop small supporting stones to cover an underground burial chamber.   • A local Confucian school, called hyanggyo in Korean, is a public education institution of the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods. It was established nationwide to function as a local shrine for Confucius and other sages and to promote Confucian education and nurture elites in local districts. Students learned about literature including poetry composition, Confucian Classics, and history.

전주향교 대성전

  • Daeseongjeon, meaning “Hall of the Great Sage,” is the main shrine of a local Confucian school. It honors Confucius and other Confucian sages. It is believed that during the performance of veneration rituals, the spirits of the sages come to the shrine and temporarily reside in the wooden spirit tablets that are kept inside.

  • Beacons were a type of a smoke-and-fire-signal communication system to warn of military events such as enemy invasions. The beacons, which are located atop mountains for visibility, had five furnaces which were lit in a particular pattern to indicate the severity of the situation.

나무

이팝나무

  • Retusa fringe tree (Chionanthus retusus (Thunb.) Koidz.) is a deciduous broadleaf tree in the family Oleaceae. It is native to Korea, China, Taiwan, and Japan and grows well in a sunny place in valleys, mountainous areas, and seashores. In Korea, this tree is called ipap namu, meaning “rice tree,” as its white blossoms covering the entire tree resemble cooked rice. Its flowers bloom between May and June for about 20 days. It is believed that if this tree’s flowers bloom fully, it is a sign there will be a good harvest, while if it blooms weakly, it is a sign of drought.
    • 이팝나무는 물푸레나무과의 낙엽활엽교목이다. 한국, 중국, 대만, 일본 등지에 분포하며 골짜기, 산지, 해안가 등 양지바른 곳에서 잘 자란다. 한국에서는 '쌀나무'라는 뜻의 '이팝나무'로 불리는데, 꽃이 필 때 나무 전체가 하얀 꽃으로 뒤덮여 쌀밥과 같다고 해서 붙여진 이름이다. 꽃은 5-6월에 피어 20일가량 만개한다. 이 나무의 꽃이 활짝 피면 풍년이 들고, 잘 피지 않으면 흉년이 진다고 여겨진다.

은행나무

As its foliage creates a wide shaded area, the ginkgo is typically planted along the road and at village entrances. In autumn, the fan-shaped leaves turn a bright yellow.

정려

  • During the Joseon period (1392-1910), commemorative plaques or steles were bestowed by the government to honor a person’s patriotic loyalty, filial devotion, or matrimonial devotion and were meant to be hung on red gates or in pavilions in front of the honored family’s home.
    • 조선시대에는 나라에서 충신, 효자, 열녀에게 정려 현판 또는 정려비를 내렸으며, 정려를 받은 사람의 집 앞에 붉은 문을 세우거나 정려각을 세워 모셨다.

객사

  • A guesthouse, called gaeksa in Korean, was a part of a local government office during the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods. The guesthouse consists of a shrine in the center, where a wooden tablet symbolizing the king was held, and a room to each side, which was used as temporary lodging for important guests or officials visiting the region on duty. The wooden tablet, enshrined in each local guesthouse, exhibited the king’s sovereignty across the country. To acknowledge this sovereignty, the local magistrate and other officials regularly performed a ceremony here in which they prostrated themselves toward the royal capital.
    • 객사는 고려와 조선시대에 고을 관아에 설치했다. 객사는 가운데에 왕의 전패를 모신 정청이 있고, 좌우 양쪽에는 공무로 출장 온 관원이나 고을을 찾은 중요한 손님들이 숙소로 사용되던 익헌이 있다. 객사에 모셔진 전패는 왕의 통치권을 상징하는 것이다. 이러한 통치권을 바탕으로 고을 수령과 관리들은 궁궐을 향해 절하는 망궐례를 행했다.
