Eight Scenic Views of Seo-gu: Landscapes of History and Nature
Narrative
In Gwangju’s Seo-gu district, eight scenic and historic sites are collectively known as the “Eight Scenic Views of Seo-gu.” The May 18 Memorial Park commemorates the May 18 Democratic Uprising, reminding visitors of the citizens’ resistance and their pursuit of democracy. Geumdangsan Mountain, which stretches across Nam-gu and Seo-gu, rises to 303.5 meters and is home to Okcheonsa Temple, a serene mountain monastery. The Mangwijeong Pavilion was built by the descendants of Jang Chang-u (1704-1774) on the site where he once taught, in honor of his virtue and scholarship. The Seochang Sunset Fields offer expansive views of farmland bathed in evening light, while the Dolmens in Yongdu-dong offer a glimpse into Bronze Age burial practices. Yangdong Market, one of Gwangju’s most representative traditional markets, is especially known for shops specializing in fermented skate and fresh chicken. The Rock-carved Seated Buddha of Uncheonsa Temple, designated as a Gwangju Tangible Cultural Heritage, sits within Uncheonsa Temple. Finally, Pungam Lake Park serves as a modern recreational space beloved by citizens. Together, the Eight Views of Seo-gu embody the district’s identity, harmonizing history, nature, and everyday life.
