Gwangju’s Three Sets of Eight Views: History, Nature, and Life

Narrative

Three of Gwangju’s districts—Seo-gu, Buk-gu, and Gwangsan-gu—maintain their own Eight Scenic Views. The Eight Scenic Views of Seo-gu links memory and everyday life, from the May 18 Memorial Park and Bronze Age dolmens to Yangdong Market and Pungam Lake Park. The Eight Scenic Views of Buk-gu connect democracy, art, and tradition, centering on the May 18th National Cemetery, the Jungoe Park Cultural and Art Belt, historic pavilions, Malbau Market, and the Gwangju-Kia Champions Field. The Eight Scenic Views of Gwangsan-gu pair landscapes with verse—peaks, rivers, sunsets, rainbows, drifting clouds, and the refined mood of Pungyeongjeong and Hogajeong Pavilions. Together, the three sets trace Gwangju’s identity across place and time.
