The Boy’s Path: Walking Through May in Gwangju
Narrative
Inspired by the novel Human Acts by Han Kang, the Boy’s Path is a walking tour that traces the historic sites of the May 18 Democratic Uprising. Honoring the courage and sacrifice of Gwangju’s citizens who stood for democracy, human rights, and peace, travelers walk the city in the footsteps of the boy from that day.
The route begins at the Main Gate of Chonnam National University and passes through key historic sites, including the Former Jeollanam-do Provincial Government Building, May 18 Democracy Square, Sangmugwan Hall, and Jeonil Building 245. It continues along Gwangsan-gil Road and the Gwangju Stream, past the former Gwangju Red Cross Hospital, and ends at the May 18th National Cemetery. Each location preserves vivid memories of the movement and still resonates with the spirit of that time.
The Boy’s Path is more than a walking tour—it is a powerful journey through Gwangju’s painful past, enduring solidarity, and living spirit of peace. It is a path we walk together to remember and reflect.
