Hwasuru Pavilion

This structure at the front of Okcheonjaesa Ritual House is considered to be a gate pavilion, as its main floor is elevated in the style of a pavilion to create a passageway underneath that can be used to enter the central courtyard of the ritual house. It was first built in the 1750s, but later burnt down and was rebuilt in 1812. The main floor consists of a wooden-floored hall at the center where ancestral rituals are performed and where lectures are held. To the sides are underfloor-heated rooms, which are each reserved for the descendants of the lineage and the family elders.

The name Hwasuru means “Pavilion of Flowers and Trees” and symbolizes family harmony in that the flowers and branches of a tree all originate from a single root.
