Cheonghaesa Shrine

2020

This shrine was established in 1970 to honor Yi Ji-ran (1331-1402), the progenitor of the Cheonghae Yi clan, and his descendant Yi Jung-no (1577-1624).

Yi Ji-ran was originally a warrior of Jurchen descent but became a naturalized subject of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392) during the reign of King Gongmin (r. 1351-1374). He was a close friend of the general Yi Seong-gye (1335-1408) and aided him in the foundation of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), for which he was made a meritorious subject and bestowed a new name. Yi Jung-no, his 7th-generation descendant, was made a meritorious subject for his involvement in the coup which brought King Injo (r. 1623-1649) to power.

This shrine used to be located elsewhere but began to deteriorate, so a new shrine building was built here in 2000. Inside the shrine, there is a plaque hung at the center, which bears the four characters representing the family motto of “loyalty, integrity, filial piety, and diligence.” Below the plaque are the spirit tablets of Yi Ji-ran to the left and Yi Jung-no to the right. The head-and-shoulders portrait depicts Yi Ji-ran, and the seated full-length portrait depicts Yi Jung-no in his official robe. A ritual is held here annually on the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month.

The pavilion to the left of the shrine houses steles which commemorate the patriotic loyalty of Yi Jung-no, the matrimonial devotion of his wife, and the filial piety of his two sons, Mun-ung and Mun-wi.
