국문

조선 전기의 명장 최윤덕(崔潤德, 1376~1445)은 창원 출신으로 그의 집안은 대를 이은 무반 집안이었다. 어려서부터 힘이 세고 활을 잘 쏘았는데, 소에게 풀을 먹이러 갔다가 화살 하나로 호랑이를 쏘아 죽였다는 일화가 전한다. 태조 3년(1394) 소과에 급제하여 관직에 나갔으며, 태종 10년(1410) 무과에 합격하였다. 당시 여진족이 점거하고 있던 동북면 지역의 지휘관으로 활약하였으며, 이후 세종(1418~1450 재위) 대에는 쓰시마 정벌과 북방 개척 등을 주도하며 왕의 신임을 얻었다. 무반임에도 세종 17년(1435) 최고의 문반직인 좌의정에 올랐으며, 이후에도 변방에 문제가 생길 때마다 지체 없이 나서는 모범을 보였다. 세상을 떠나기 직전인 세종 27년(1445)에는 궤장*을 받아 신하로서 최고의 영예를 누렸다.

최윤덕의 묘는 화강석으로 둘러싸인 방형 무덤으로, 이러한 형태는 조선 전기에 유행하였다. 묘 앞에는 상석과 한 쌍의 문인석이 있으며, 봉분 오른쪽에는 헌종 12년(1846) 최윤덕의 10세손 최응태가 세운 묘갈**이 있다. 최윤덕의 묘에서 동북쪽으로 10m 정도 떨어

Tomb of Choe Yun-deok, Changwon

This is the tomb of Choe Yun-deok (1376-1445), a renowned general of the Joseon period (1392-1910).

Choe Yun-deok was born in Changwon to a family of military nobility. Since early childhood, he exhibited great strength and excelled in archery. There is an anecdote about him going to the mountains to feed the cattle and being attacked by a tiger, which he shot down with a single arrow. He passed the licentiate examination in 1394 and the state examination in 1410. He served as a commander in the northeast region occupied by the Jurchens. Later, during the reign of King Sejong (r. 1418-1450), Choe led various military operations including both the offensive on Tsushima Island to the south and the expansion north, which won him the king’s trust. Despite being a senior army officer, in 1435, he was promoted to second state councilor, the second-highest civil official position. But even after the promotion, whenever a problem loomed at the country’s border, he stepped up and served by example. For his outstanding service to the country, in 1445, right before his death, the king bestowed him with a commemorative chair and a staff, the highest honor given to an official after turning 70 years old.

The square base of the tomb mound is enclosed by granite stones. This type of a tomb was prevalent during the early period of Joseon. In front of the tomb stand a stone table and two stone statues of civil officials. To the right is a tombstone erected in 1846 by Choe Eung-tae, a 10th-generation descendant of Choe Yun-deok. About 10 m to the northeast of Choe’s tomb is another tomb built in the same style, presumed to have belonged to his wife Lady Do.

최윤덕의 묘는 방형 무덤으로 봉분 아래쪽을 화강암으로 둘렀다. 이러한 형태는 조선 전기에 유행하였다. 묘 앞에는 상석과 한 쌍의 문인석이 있으며, 봉분 오른쪽에는 1846년 최윤덕의 10세손 최응태가 건립한 묘갈이 있다. 최윤덕의 묘에서 동북쪽으로 10m 정도 떨어진 곳에 같은 형태의 묘가 있는데 부인 도씨의 묘로 추정된다.
