해설문

국문

진도개는 진도군 일대에서 우리 선조들이 옛날부터 길러오고 있는 우리나라의 대표적인 토종개 품종이다. 주인에 대한 충성심과 복종심이 강하며, 뛰어난 귀가성을 지니고 있다. 특히, 대전으로 팔려가 300㎞를 돌아온 백구의 이야기는 진도개의 우수성을 보여주는 사례이다. 외모는 암수의 구분이 뚜렷하고, 키는 수컷이 48~53cm, 암컷이 45~50cm 정도이다. 머리와 얼굴은 정면에서 봤을 때 팔각형이고, 턱이 야무지며 전체적으로 온순한 인상이다.

진도개의 유래에 대해서는 삼국시대에 송나라 배가 진도 근처에서 난파하여 그 배에 있던 개가 들어왔다는 설, 고려시대 몽고군의 군견이 들어와 목장견으로 쓰였다는 설, 진도 토종개가 늑대와 교배해 되었다는 설 등이 있다. 명확한 기록이 없어 단정할 수 없으나 석기시대부터 기르던 개의 종류가 육지와 떨어진 진도라는 지리적 환경으로 인해 순수한 혈통을 그대로 보존해 온 것으로 보인다.

진도개는 현재 우리나라의 고유 품종으로서 학술적 가치가 크므로 천연기념물로 지정하여 보호하고 있다.

영문

Jindo Dog of Jindo Island

The Jindo dog is an indigenous Korean dog breed native to Jindo Island. It is known for its loyalty and obedience to its owner, as well as its excellent homing instincts.

Male and female Jindo dogs differ in size, measuring an average of 48-53 cm and 45-50 cm in height, respectively. The face and head have an octagonal shape when seen from the front. The jaw gives off a dependable appearance, and the facial features are overall gentle.

There are no written records about the origin of the Jindo dog. Due the area’s isolated island environment, it is presumed that the bloodline of the dogs raised on Jindo Island has been preserved since the Stone Age without the introduction of outside dogs. There are various legends about the breed’s origin, such as that they were introduced when a ship from Song China (960-1279) wrecked in the waters near Jindo Island, that they were introduced by the Mongols during their invasions in the 13th century, and that they are descended from hybrids of dogs and wolves that lived on Jindo Island.
