Tomb and Stele of Bak Sun

This is the tomb of Bak Sun (1523-1589), a civil official of the Joseon period (1392-1910), and his wife Lady Go. A stele that records Bak’s life and achievements is located in front of Okbyeongseowon Confucian Academy, around 530 m to the north of the tomb.

Bak passed the state examination in 1553 and served various official posts. In 1565, he successfully led the impeachment of a royal relative who was notorious for his abuse of power. During the reign of King Seonjo (r. 1567-1608), he served various high posts before eventually being appointed as chief state councilor, the highest position in the government, in 1579. However, in 1586, he was impeached and stepped down from office, retiring to Yeongpyeong (today’s Pocheon) where he built a pavilion on Baegunsan Mountain.

Much of the tomb has been newly renovated. The stones around the base of the tomb mounds were newly added, as were the stone table, stone incense table, and stone lantern. The tombstone on the right was erected in 1983. Only the civil official statues and stone pillars are original.

The stele in front of Okbyeongseowon was erected in 1909. Its inscription was composed by the scholar Song Si-yeol (1607-1689), calligraphed by an 11th-generation descendant of one of Bak’s daughters, Yi Choe-su, and its heading was calligraphed by a 10th-generation descendant Yi Seung-hoe.
