해설문

국문

명문석은 읍성을 쌓은 사람들의 이름과 출신 고을의 이름을 함께 새긴 돌이다. 구간에 따라 책임자의 이름을 기록하여 읍성을 지은 뒤 발생하는 문제 등을 관리하기 위해 만들었다.

웅천읍성의 동쪽 성벽과 남쪽 성벽에서는 모두 5개의 명문석이 확인되었다. 웅천읍성의 명문석에서 지명이 확인된 곳은 진주, 창녕, 청도, 합천으로, 당시 웅천읍성을 쌓기 위해 경상도 전역의 백성들이 동원되었음을 알 수 있다.

Name Inscription Stones (Uncheoneupseong Walled Town, Changwon)

A name inscription stone is a stone within a fortress wall that lists the names and hometowns of the workers who participated in the construction of the fortress. It also lists the name of the person in charge of each section of the wall, so that he could be held accountable for any possible problems that might occur after the wall is completed.

There are a total of five name inscription stones remaining along the eastern and the southern walls of Uncheoneupseong Walled Town. The workers’ hometowns inscribed on these stones include Jinju, Changnyeong, Cheongdo, and Hapcheon, which shows that workers from across the Gyeongsang-do region were recruited for the construction of this walled town.

영문 해설 내용

이 돌에는 읍성을 쌓은 사람들의 이름과 출신 고을의 이름이 함께 새겨져 있다. 성벽 구간에 따라 책임자의 이름을 기록하여, 읍성을 지은 뒤 발생하는 문제 등을 관리하기 위해 만들었다.

이러한 명문석은 동쪽과 남쪽 성벽에서 모두 5개 확인되었다. 웅천읍성의 명문석에서 확인되는 지명은 진주, 창녕, 청도, 합천으로, 당시 웅천읍성을 쌓기 위해 경상도 전역의 백성들이 동원되었음을 알 수 있다.
