Main Worship Hall Site

This is the site of the main worship hall of the Buddhist temple which once stood at this archeological site. It is presumed that the temple was established either at the end of the Baekje period (18 BCE-660 CE) or at the beginning of the Unified Silla period (668-935). It was built atop the Baekje palace that first stood here. The temple was oriented to face south and consisted from front to back of a stone pagoda, a main worship hall, and a lecture hall, as well as various auxiliary buildings and a roof tile kiln.

The main worship hall was known in Korean as Geumdang, meaning “Hall of Gold,” and refers to the golden light that emanates from the Buddha. It was here that a statue of the Buddha would have been enshrined. The building measured 19.3 m in width and 14.5 m in length, and its interior had an open floor plan.
