안심사 영산회 괘불탱

해설문

괘불(掛佛)이란 사찰에서 큰 법회나 부처님 오신 날과 같은 불교행사가 있을 때 야외에 걸어 예배할 수 있도록 만들어진 불화(佛畵)로서 전국적으로 남아 있는 것이 드물다.

안심사에 전해지는 이 괘불은 윗부분 일부에 약간의 손상이 있으나 전체적으로 보존상태가 양호하고 색상도 거의 원모습을 간직하고 있다.

석가여래를 가운데 모시고 그 주위에 불보살과 제자들인 교화성중(敎化聖衆)과 사천왕(四天王)의 호법신(護法神)들을 좌우대칭으로 배치한 것으로 색감이 밝고 화려하며 기교가 뛰어나서 당대 불화를 대표할 수 있을 만한 역작이다.

괘불의 하단에는 '순치9년 임진4월일(順治九年壬辰四月日)'이라는 제작연대가 쓰여 있어 조선 1652년(효종 3)에 제작되었음을 알 수 있다.

Such hanging paintings were displayed outdoors on special occasions such as the Buddha's birthday, outdoor rites, and the funerals of eminent monks.

As these paintings are vulnerable to damage, few of them remain in Korea.

In this painting, Sakyamuni is portrayed in the center, with various bodhisattvas, guardians, and followers illustrated around him.

Painted in full color, it has been preserved in good condition, and is regarded one of the greatest masterpieces made during the 17th century.

It is 7.26 m in length and 4.72 m in width.
