해설문

의정부의 중심 건물들이 있던 곳으로 한 단 높인 정본당을 가운데 두고 좌우로 석획당과 협선당을 배치하여 건물 세 동이 나란히 있는 ‘3당 병립 형태’였다.

가운데 건물을 크고 높게 하고 좌우로 대칭되게 두 건물을 두었으며, 이들 건물 사이를 복도각으로 연결하고 건물 앞에 월대를 둔 구성은 종친부나 삼군부의 청사 구성과 같다.

정본당은 조선시대 의정부를 대표하는 정1품 관리인 영의정, 좌의정, 우의정의 집무실로 쓰였다. 정면 7칸, 측면 4칸의 규모로 추정된다.

협선당은 찬성(종1품)과 참찬(정2품)이 사용하는 공간으로 정본당 다음으로 의정부 내에서 위상이 높은 건물인데, 현재 도로 밑에 반쯤 묻혀 있고, 바닥과 기단 일부만 확인되었다.

석획당은 여러 재상이 사무를 보던 곳으로 건물터의 전면 기초와 화강암을 길게 다듬어 만든 장대석으로 이루어진 기단이 확인되었다.

주초석이 남아 있지 않아 정확한 규모를 알 수 없지만 발굴조사된 유구와 옛 사진 등을 토대로 분석한 결과 협선당과 석획당은 정면 5칸, 측면 2칸반~3칸의 규모로 추정된다.

영문

Hyeopseondang Hall, Jeongbondang Hall, and Seokhoekdang Hall (State Council Site) --> (Three) Main Buildings??

This is the site of three main buildings of the State Council (Uijeongbu), the highest government office of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). The three buildings were arranged next to one other in a row and were connected via roofed corridors with a wide stone platform in front.

In the center was Jeongbondang ("Hall of the Government's Root"), which was the office of the chief state councilor, second state councilor, and third state councilor, the three highest-ranking government officials in the Joseon government. Due to its status, this building was larger and taller than the adjacent offices.

On the left was Hyeopseondang ("Hall of Cooperative Declaration"), which was occupied by the assistant and associate state councilors. Due to its location, about half of its remains are buried beneath the road, so only part of its floor and platform were identified in archeological excavations.

On the right was Seokhoekdang ("Hall of Stone Carving"), which was the workplace of other various ministers. Remains of its platform, made of long, rectangular granite blocks, and parts of its base along the facade were identified in archeological excavations.
