국문

지질학은 지각의 구성 물질, 구조, 생성 원인 등의 변화 과정을 살펴 지구의 기원과 암석의 생성 원인 등을 다루며, 지구의 탄생에서 현재까지의 모든 무생물계와 생물계의 변천 과정을 규명함으로써 지구의 역사를 밝히는 자연과학의 한 분야입니다.

이 전시실은 지질시대를 알 수 있는 암석, 광물, 화석을 시대와 생성 원인별로 전시한 공간으로 지질의 구조와 역사를 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 공간입니다.

대표적인 지하자원이었던 석탄의 생성 ‧ 발견 관련 역사를 보임으로써 인류사에서 사회 문명 발전의 바탕이 된‘불과 인간’의 관계를 소개하는 공간입니다.

또한 우리나라 석탄분포 및 최대 석탄 생산지인 삼척탄전의 탄광 개발 변천사를 소개하여 석탄의 역할과 중요성을 인식할 수 있는 전시실입니다.

인류가 석탄을 발견하고, 그것을 채굴하여 이용하는 지혜와 기술의 발달 과정을 다양한 전시물에서 쉽게 알 수 있는 공간이며, 석탄이 우리 실생활에 가져온 변화 등에 대한 이해를 돕는 전시실입니다.

지하에 매장되어 있는 석탄을 채취하려면 많은 어려움과 위험이 따르는데, 이로써 발생되는 탄광 사고의 원인과 유형들을 소개하는 공간입니다.

또한 사고 발생 시 구조 및 사고 방지에 사용되는 다양한 안전 장비, 안전시설 등을 전시함으로써 과거 산업역군들의 헌신과 희생을 다시금 되새겨 볼 수 있는 전시실입니다.

우리나라 건국 전후부터 1989년 석탄산업합리화 정책에 이르기까지 석탄 개발에 대한 국가 주요 정책의 변화 과정과 석탄산업 일선에서 노력해 온 근로자들의 노조 활동 등에서 석탄산업의 변화를 알 수 있는 공간입니다.

또한 산업발전의 원동력인 석탄의 순기능과 역기능을 이해함으로써 석탄이 지닌 양면성을 동시에 확인해 볼 수 있습니다.

탄광의 본격적인 개발로 자연스레 생겨난 탄광촌은 다른 지역과는 달리 독특한 생활관습과 문화가 발달했습니다. 이곳은 당시의 생활상과 탄광 종사원들의 삶에 공감할 수 있도록 다양한 전시물을 전시해 놓은 공간입니다.

우리나라 석탄산업의 중심 도시이며, 석탄박물관이 있는 태백 지역을 소개하는 곳으로, 석탄산업 개발 이전, 태백의 자연 ‧ 역사 ‧ 문화예술 ‧ 문화유산 ‧ 토속신앙 등에 대한 전시물에서 당시 생활양식과 향토 문화를 엿볼 수 있는 공간입니다. 또한 태백이 지닌 자연의 신비로움을 느낄 수 있는 다양한 관광지와 문화 행사를 홍보하는 곳입니다.
