국문
지질학은 지각의 구성 물질, 구조, 생성 원인 등의 변화 과정을 살펴 지구의 기원과 암석의 생성 원인 등을 다루며, 지구의 탄생에서 현재까지의 모든 무생물계와 생물계의 변천 과정을 규명함으로써 지구의 역사를 밝히는 자연과학의 한 분야입니다.
이 전시실은 지질시대를 알 수 있는 암석, 광물, 화석을 시대와 생성 원인별로 전시한 공간으로 지질의 구조와 역사를 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 공간입니다.
대표적인 지하자원이었던 석탄의 생성 ‧ 발견 관련 역사를 보임으로써 인류사에서 사회 문명 발전의 바탕이 된‘불과 인간’의 관계를 소개하는 공간입니다.
또한 우리나라 석탄분포 및 최대 석탄 생산지인 삼척탄전의 탄광 개발 변천사를 소개하여 석탄의 역할과 중요성을 인식할 수 있는 전시실입니다.
인류가 석탄을 발견하고, 그것을 채굴하여 이용하는 지혜와 기술의 발달 과정을 다양한 전시물에서 쉽게 알 수 있는 공간이며, 석탄이 우리 실생활에 가져온 변화 등에 대한 이해를 돕는 전시실입니다.
지하에 매장되어 있는 석탄을 채취하려면 많은 어려움과 위험이 따르는데, 이로써 발생되는 탄광 사고의 원인과 유형들을 소개하는 공간입니다.
또한 사고 발생 시 구조 및 사고 방지에 사용되는 다양한 안전 장비, 안전시설 등을 전시함으로써 과거 산업역군들의 헌신과 희생을 다시금 되새겨 볼 수 있는 전시실입니다.
우리나라 건국 전후부터 1989년 석탄산업합리화 정책에 이르기까지 석탄 개발에 대한 국가 주요 정책의 변화 과정과 석탄산업 일선에서 노력해 온 근로자들의 노조 활동 등에서 석탄산업의 변화를 알 수 있는 공간입니다.
또한 산업발전의 원동력인 석탄의 순기능과 역기능을 이해함으로써 석탄이 지닌 양면성을 동시에 확인해 볼 수 있습니다.
탄광의 본격적인 개발로 자연스레 생겨난 탄광촌은 다른 지역과는 달리 독특한 생활관습과 문화가 발달했습니다. 이곳은 당시의 생활상과 탄광 종사원들의 삶에 공감할 수 있도록 다양한 전시물을 전시해 놓은 공간입니다.
우리나라 석탄산업의 중심 도시이며, 석탄박물관이 있는 태백 지역을 소개하는 곳으로, 석탄산업 개발 이전, 태백의 자연 ‧ 역사 ‧ 문화예술 ‧ 문화유산 ‧ 토속신앙 등에 대한 전시물에서 당시 생활양식과 향토 문화를 엿볼 수 있는 공간입니다. 또한 태백이 지닌 자연의 신비로움을 느낄 수 있는 다양한 관광지와 문화 행사를 홍보하는 곳입니다.

- Exhibition Room 1 (Geological Features)
Geology is a branch of natural science that seeks to understand the Earth’s history by investigating the processes by which organic and inorganic matter have transformed over time, from the Earth’s beginning until today. It deals with the origins of the Earth and the mechanisms of rock formation, exploring the Earth’s crust, including the materials by which it is composed, its structure, and the mechanisms behind its formation. This exhibition room exhibits rocks, minerals, and fossils, organized according to their geological period and formation mechanism, to aid in the understanding of the structure and history of geological features.
- Exhibition Room 2 (The Formation and Discovery of Coal)
This exhibition room introduces the relationship between fire and humankind, which served as the basis for the advancement of society and civilization in human history, by showing the history of the formation and discovery of coal, a representative underground resource. This space also conveys the role and importance of coal by introducing the history of mine development within the Samcheok Coal Field, which boasts the greatest distribution and production of coal in Korea.
- Exhibition Room 3 (Mining and Using Coal)
This exhibition room shows how the wisdom and technology behind the discovery, mining, and use of coal has developed over time through its diverse exhibition objects. Thus, this space helps us understand how coal has changed our everyday lives.
- Exhibition Room 4 (Mining Safety)
This exhibition room introduces the causes and types of mine accidents that occur in the difficult and dangerous process of extracting coal buried underground. By exhibiting diverse safety equipment and facilities used to prevent accidents and perform rescues when accidents occur, the exhibition room serves as a space to reflect upon the devotion and sacrifice of the workers who were the pillars of the industry.
- Exhibition Room 5 (Mining Policy)
This exhibition room shows the changes in the coal industry over time by highlighting the labor union activities of the workers who served on the industry’s front lines, as well as the major national policies on coal development from the early twentieth century until the Coal Industry Rationalization Policy of 1989. Here, we can also consider the double-sided nature of coal, which served as the driving force of industrial development, by understanding its positive and adverse effects.
- Exhibition Room 6 (Life in a Mining Town)
A unique culture and set of customs developed in the mining towns that naturally arose along with the active development of the coal mines. This room exhibits diverse objects that help us to sympathize with the lives of the coal mine employees and understand the living conditions of the time.
- Exhibition Room 7 (The Taebaek Area)
This exhibition room takes a look at the local culture and way of life of the Taebaek area, which serves as the heart of Korea’s coal industry and the home of the Taebaek Coal Museum, by exhibiting objects related to Taebaek’s natural landscape, history, culture and arts, cultural heritage, and folk beliefs. This space also highlights the diverse tourist attractions and cultural events that convey the enchanting character of Taebaek’s natural scenery.
