Born into the Hansan Yi Clan, Yi Hui-jo was a descendant of the revered scholar and politician Yi Saek (1328-1396) and a son of Yi Hyeon-yeong (1573-1642) who served the post of minister of personnel. Following the Manchu invasion of 1637, Yi was sent to the Qing capital (today’s Shenyang, China) as per Qing’s request to send children of Korea’s high-ranking officials as hostages. In seven years, he returned home and later went on to serve various official posts such as magistrate of Icheon, magistrate of Yeongcheon, and magistrate of Paju.

The stone sculptures in front of the tomb mound include a stone spirit seat, a stone table, a stone incense table, and stone pillars. The tomb mound is encircled by protecting stones around the base. The tombstone was installed in 1686. The text on the tombstone was composed by the vice minister of personnel Bak Se-chae (1631-1695) and calligraphed by Nam Gu-man (1629-1711), a famous calligrapher of the time. The name of the tombstone inscribed at the top was calligraphed by the inspector-general Sin Ik-sang (1634-1697).

이휘조(자는 자미, 본관은 한산, 1603~1681)은 숙종대의 문신으로 목은 이색의 후손이며, 부는 이조판서 이현영(李顯英)이다. 그리고 명성황후(明成皇后)의 7대 외조부이기 하다. 1637년 병자호란 직후 재상의 자제를 볼모로 보내야 한다는 청나라의 요구에 따라 이조판서의 아들로 심양에 끌려갔다 7년 만에 귀국 하였다. 1645년 장원서주부가 되고, 1664년(현종 5) 이천부사를 비롯하여 영천 군수, 파주 목사 등 여러 고을을 다스렸다.

묘는 이휘조와 부인 광주이씨의 합장묘이다. 묘역에는 혼유석, 상석, 향로석, 망주석이 있으며, 봉분에는 원형의 호석이 둘러져 있다. 입구의 묘갈은 숙종12년(1686)에 건립된 것으로 갈제(碣題)는 이조참판인 박세체가 지었으며 글씨는 당대의 명필인 남구만(南九萬)이 썼고, 비신 상단의 전액은 신익상(申翼相)이 올렸다.

이휘조 묘소 아래에는 손자 군자감판관 이명항(李明恒)의 묘가 있다.

이휘조는 한산이씨로 고려 때의 대학자이자 정치가인 이색(1328-1396)의 후손이고 이조판서 이현영(1573-1642)의 아들이다. 병자호란 직후 재상의 자제를 볼모로 보내야 한다는 청나라의 요구에 따라, 심양에 끌려갔다가 7년 만에 귀국 하였다. 이후 이천부사, 영천군수, 파주목사 등 여러 관직을 지냈다.
