This house is the Head House of the Bae Clan, also called Imyeonjae House. “Imyeonjae” is the pen-name of  Bae Samik (1534-1588) who constructed the house in 1558.

Bae Samik, one of the students of Yi Hwang (1501-1570) was successful in passing the highest civil examination in 1564, and served as an envoy to the Ming Dynasty and Governor of Hwanghae Province. It is known that because he worked so hard not looking after himself he was too sick and weak to save people in the province from famine, and died on his way home. He was also known to have been good at calligraphy.

Bae Sam-ik was a student of the renowned scholar Yi Hwang (1501-1570). He passed the state examination in 1564 and later served as an envoy to the Ming China and as governor of Hwanghae-do Province. While serving as governor, there was a famine in the region. Even though he was ill, he worked tirelessly to help the region recover from the famine. However, his illness worsened, and he was forced to resign from his post. He died on his journey home. Bae Sam-ik was also known for his skill in calligraphy.  
  
The house is composed of three components; the main building, detached quarters called Geumyeokdang Hall, and a shrine. The name “Geumyeongdang” originated from the pen-name of Hae Samik's son, Bae Younggil (1556-1609). Inside the Hall is the plaque of Yimyeonjae Domokchon written by Yi Hwang.

임연재 종택은 조선 중기 때 문신이었던 배삼익(裵三益, 1534~1588, 호: 임연재) 가문의 종택으로, 1558년에 지어졌다. 종택은 한 가문의 맏이가 대대로 살아온 집을 말한다. 임연재 종택은 원래 월곡면 도목리에 있었으나 안동댐을 건설하면서 1973년에 현재의 위치로 옮겼다.

배삼익은 이황(李滉)의 제자로 1564년 문과에 급제하였다. 명나라에 사신으로 파견되기도 했고 황해도 관찰사를 지내기도 했다. 관찰사 시절 흉년을 구하기 위해 병든 몸으로 열심히 일하다 병이 깊어 사직하고, 돌아오는 길에 사망하였다. 글씨를 잘 쓰기로 유명하여 장서가로 후세까지 이름을 남겼으며, 필법이 힘찼다.

현재 종택에는 안채와 별당인 금역당, 사당 등 3개의 건물이 남아 있다. ‘금역당(琴易堂)’이란 이름은 배삼익의 아들인 배용길(裵龍吉)의 호에서 따왔다. 금역당 안에 ‘임연재’, ‘도목촌(桃木村)’이란 현판이 걸려 있는데, 모두 이황이 직접 썼다.
