국문
화성 서쪽 성벽에 있는 비상시 출입문이다. 화성의 다섯 군데 암문 중에 서쪽 서장대 꼭대기에 설치했다. 암문은 적이 알 수 없는 위치에 문을 내서 사람이나 물자, 식량 등을 성 안에 들이는 시설이다. 서암문은 일부러 성벽이 접혀 들어가도록 하고 옆 방향으로 문을 내서 밖에서는 문이 있는지 알아차리기 어렵도록 했다. 서암문을 들어서면 북쪽으로 서장대와 서노대가 자리 잡고 있다. 다른 암문에는 오성지나 원여장 같은 시설을 두었지만 여기서는 지형의 이점을 살리는 대신 별다른 시설은 두지 않았다. 측면에 난 문을 들어서면 직각 방향으로 꺾여서 계단을 두고 성 안에 오를 수 있도록 했다. 눈 여겨 볼 부분 중 하나는 서암문 바깥 쪽의 둥글게 휘어진 성벽이다. 벽돌을 가지고 성벽을 동그랗게 쌓아 올렸는데, 돌로 쌓을 때는 좀처럼 만들기 어려운 면을 벽돌을 이용해서 손쉽게 모양새를 이루었다. 서암문 주변의 여장은 원형이 잘 남아있다. 화성의 여장은 대부분 무너져서 1979년에 흰색 돌로 복원해 놓았지만 이곳만은 약간 붉은 색이 도는 원래의 돌로 쌓은 여장 모습을 볼 수 있다.

영문 해설 내용
암문은 적의 눈에 띄지 않고 성내에서 필요한 물자나 식량 등을 운반하는 비상통로였다. 화성에는 모두 다섯 개의 암문이 있었으나, 남암문은 20세기 초 도시개발로 인해 사라졌다.
서암문은 군사지휘소인 서장대 가까이에 위치하고 있어 전략상 중요한 곳이다. 따라서 성벽의 일부를 안쪽으로 들여서 쌓고 측면에 문을 내서 바깥에서는 문이 있는지 알 수 없도록 했다. 문 바깥 쪽의 둥근 성벽은 돌 대신 벽돌을 사용하여 독특한 형태를 이루었다. 이 주변의 성벽은 1979년 한차례 수리했으나, 1796년 축성 당시의 원형이 대체로 많이 남아있다.
