국문
팔달문을 중심으로 동쪽은 남동적대, 남안문, 남공심돈과 성벽이 안쪽으로 크게 꺾이면서 남수문까지이고, 서쪽은 언덕을 따라 남서적대, 남치, 남포루가 있다. 팔달문 동쪽은 평탄한 지형인데 반해 서쪽은 지형이 점점 높아지면서 팔달산을 향한다. 성안의 물길이 남성에서 밖으로 흘러나가기 때문에 동편에는 개방된 큰 수문을 내고 서쪽에는 남은구라고 하는 감추어진 수문을 냈다. 지난 1979년에 성벽을 대부분 복원했지만 팔달문에서 동쪽 남공심돈까지는 시장이 형성되어 있어서 복원하지 못했고 남수문만 나중에 다시 세웠다. 이 구간의 볼거리는 창건 당시의 모습을 간직하고 있는 팔달문의 위용과 최근 새로 복원한 아홉 개 홍예문이 이어진 남수문의 장관이다.

남성은 화성의 남쪽 성벽 부분으로, 남문인 팔달문을 비롯하여 동쪽으로는 남수문이 있는 곳까지, 서쪽으로는 남치와 남포루가 있는 곳까지를 포함한다. 남성의 동쪽은 평탄한 지형인데 반해 서쪽은 지형이 점점 높아지면서 팔달산을 향한다.
화성의 남쪽 지역은 인구가 밀집하고 상업활동이 활발하던 곳이었다. 화성 성벽의 대부분이 1979년에 복원되었지만, 남성 구역은 팔달문 주위에 시장이 형성되어 있어서 복원하지 못하였다. 남수문은 1922년 대홍수로 인해 유실되었으며 2011년 아홉개의 홍예로 복원되었다.
화성을 축성하면서 성벽을 네 구역으로 나눈 가운데 남쪽 구간이다. 팔달문을 중심으로 동쪽에 방어용 시설과 비밀 출입문 및 남쪽 수문이 있고 서쪽으로는 경사진 지형을 따라 3개의 방어 시설이 있다. 화성의 남쪽 지역은 인구가 밀집하고 상업활동이 활발하던 곳이었다. 이 구간의 성벽은 시장이 형성되어 있어서 1979년의 복원에서도 제외 되었다.
