These two ancient tombs in Myeonghwa-dong are presumed to have been built in the first half of the 6th century during the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE-668 CE). 명화동 장고분은 삼국시대인 6세기 전반 무렵에 만들어진 무덤이다. 위에서 보면 둥글고 네모난 봉분이 붙은 모습의 ‘전방후원형(前方後圓形)’ 무덤으로, 그 모습이 우리나라 전통 악기인 장고처럼 생겼다고 해서 ‘장고분’으로 불린다. 이와 같은 구조의 무덤은 일본의 고대 유적에서도 많이 발견되며, 고대 한국과 일본의 교류 관계를 보여주는 자료로 여겨진다.

이 고분은 1992년에 처음 알려졌고, 1993년과 1994년 두 차례에 걸쳐 조사되었다. 규모는 전체 길이 33m, 원형 부분 높이 2.73m, 원형 부분 지름 18m, 연결 부분 높이 1.87m, 연결 부분 폭 12m, 방형 부분 높이 2.73m, 방형 부분 폭 24m이며, 광주와 전라남도 지역에서 발견된 장고분 중 가장 작다.

조사 결과 원형 부분과 방형 부분은 동시에 만들어진 것으로 확인되었다. 원형 부분 아래에는 시신을 안치할 돌방을 만들었던 것으로 추정되나, 도굴로 심하게 파괴되어 원래의 구조를 알 수 없다. 이곳에서 출토된 유물에는 금동 귀걸이, 쇠 화살촉, 띠고리, 접시, 경질토기 조각 등이 있다.

특히 주목할만한 것은 봉분의 가장자리에 원통형 토기 여러 개가 세워진 채 발견된 점이다. 원통형 토기는 원형 부분과 방형 부분을 잇는 연결 부분의 가장자리를 따라 배치되어 있었으며, 분구 주위에서 행해진 매장 의식과 관련이 있을 것으로 추정된다.
