국문

느티나무는 느릅나무과에 속하는 낙엽활엽교목이다. 한국을 비롯하여 일본, 대만, 중국 등에 분포한다. 가지가 사방으로 퍼져 자라서 둥근 형태를 이루며, 꽃은 4~5월에 피고 열매는 원반 모양으로 10월에 익는다.

대강리 사동마을 중심에 자리한 두 그루의 느티나무는 나이가 400년 이상인 것으로 추정된다. 오른쪽의 나무는 높이 12~13m, 가슴높이 둘레 약 2.3m이고, 왼쪽의 나무는 높이 12m, 가슴높이 둘레 약 1.9m이다.

이 나무들은 오랜 세월 동안 마을을 지켜주는 수호신이자 당산목으로의 역할을 해 왔다. 마을 주민들은 이곳에서 마을의 무사태평과 풍년을 기원하는 당산제를 지내왔으며, 나무 사이에는 돌을 쌓아 만든 신묘(神墓)와 제단이 설치되어 있다.

Saw-leaf zelkova (Zelkova serrata (Thunb.) Makino) is a deciduous broadleaf tree in the family Ulmaceae. It is usually found in the warm regions of Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and China. Its stems are upright and spread to form a round-shaped top. Its flowers bloom in April and May, and its fruits ripen in October.
