조선 세종 4년(1422)에 간행된 묘법연화경이다. 묘법연화경은 석가모니가 40년간 설법한 내용을 모아 편찬된 경전으로 법화경이라고도 한다. 화엄경과 함께 한국 불교를 대표하는 경전이다. 이 책은 1418년에 죽은 성녕대군과 1420년에 죽은 원경왕후의 명복을 빌기 위하여 제작되었으며, 변계량, 함허스님 등 조선전기를 대표하는 문신과 승려의 글이 실려 있어, 그 가치가 매우 높다.

Saddharmapundarika Sutra (The Lotus Sutra), Volume 4-7

The Lotus Sutra is a Buddhist sutra and one of its main teachings is that all beings have the potential to become a buddha. The Lotus Sutra greatly informed Korean Buddhist thought and was the basis on which the Cheontae School of Korean Buddhism was established. The version of the sutra most widely distributed in ancient Korea was a classical Chinese translation of the Sanskrit sutra done by Monk Kumarajiva (344-413) in 406.

This book was printed in 1422, when Prince Seongnyeong (1405-1418), the fourth son of King Taejong passed away, by civil official Seong Eok (1386-1448) who was the father-in-law of the prince, as a prayer for the spirits for the prince and the mother of the prince, Queen Wongyeong (1365-1420). As it is a collection of texts by civil officials and Buddhist monks representative for the early Joseon period (1392-1910) such as Byeon Gye-ryang (1369-1430) and Hamheo (1376-1433), it has great value.

영문 해설 내용

『묘법연화경』은 부처가 되는 길이 누구에게나 열려있다는 것을 중심사상으로 하는 경전이다. 한국 불교사상 확립에 중요한 영향을 끼쳤으며, 천태종의 근본경전이다. 한국에서는 406년 구마라집(344-413)이 한역한 것이 주로 간행, 유통되었다.

이 책은 태종의 넷째 아들인 성녕대군(1405-1418)이 세상을 떠나자 대군의 장인이었던 문신 성억(1386-1448)이 대군과 대군의 어머니인 원경왕후(1365-1420)의 명복을 빌기 위하여 1422년에 간행하였다. 변계량(1369-1430)과 함허(1376-1433) 등 조선 전기를 대표하는 문신과 승려의 글이 실려 있어 그 가치가 매우 높다.
