치성(雉城)은 적의 접근을 빨리 파악하고, 전투 시 성벽으로 다가오는 적을 양쪽에서 공격할 수 있도록 성벽의 일부를 밖으로 돌출시켜 쌓은 것이다. 치성의 치(雉)는 꿩을 의미하는데, 꿩이 제 몸을 숨기고 밖을 잘 엿본다는 뜻에서 이런 명칭이 생겼다고 한다. 치성은 전술적으로 평지에 있는 성문의 좌우 또는 성벽이 직선으로 이어지는 구간에 주로 설치했다. 성벽의 바깥쪽에 덧대어 쌓기 때문에 구조적으로 성벽을 보강하는 역할도 한다.

상당산성은 남쪽 성벽이 직선으로 이어지기 때문에 남쪽 성벽의 방어를 위해 3곳에 치성을 쌓았다. 2호 치성은 남문(공남문(控南門))에서 서쪽으로 100m 정도 떨어진 곳에 있으며, 형태는 위에서 보면 직사각형, 정면에서 보면 사다리꼴이다. 이곳은 상당산성의 남문보다 살짝 높은 비탈면에 위치하여 남문 주변을 경계하기에 유리하다.

Bastion No. 2 (Southern Bastion) – Sangdangsanseong Fortress, Cheongju

A bastion is a stone fortification that projects outward from a fortress wall to aid in the surveillance of the surrounding area and in the defense against enemies attacking from the side. In Korean, a bastion is called chiseong, meaning "pheasant fort," as pheasants are known for their hiding and peering. Bastions were typically built to either side of a fortress gate. They helped protect the gate, which was vulnerable to attack due to its position on flat terrain or along a long and straight section of the fortress wall. Bastions also helped reinforce the fortress wall from the outside.

The southern wall of Sangdangsanseong Fortress was built in a straight line, and thus, it was equipped with three bastions. Bastion No. 2 is located about 100 m to the west of the southern gate. When seen from above, it has a rectangular shape, and when seen from the front, it has a trapezoidal shape. Located on slightly higher ground than the southern gate, this bastion served as an observation point from which the area around the gate was surveilled.
