해설문

국문

조선 제21대 왕 영조(1724~1776 재위)의 후궁인 조씨(趙氏, 1707~1780)의 무덤이다.

조씨는 숙종 42년(1716) 10살의 나이로 입궁하였다. 영조 11년(1735) 영조의 여덟째 딸을 낳아 종4품 숙원(淑媛)이 되었지만, 딸이 이듬해에 세상을 떠났다. 영조 16년(1740) 화유옹주(和裕翁主, 1740~1777)를 낳고 종2품 숙의(淑儀)가 되었으며, 정조 2년(1778) 종1품 귀인(貴人)이 되었다.

조씨의 묘는 원래 이곳에서 서쪽으로 약 2km 떨어진 작동에 있었다. 원래의 자리는 봉분 주변을 거대한 돌이 에워싼 명당에 남향으로 위치해 당시 왕실 묘의 위용과 풍수 관념을 엿볼 수 있었다고 한다. 1990년대 이후 이 지역에 도로공사 등이 이어지면서, 인근에 있던 화유옹주의 묘와 함께 2005년 지금의 위치로 옮겼다.

봉분 주위에는 낮은 담을 둘렀고, 봉분 앞에는 묘비, 혼이 나와 노닌다는 혼유석, 제물을 차려 놓는 상석, 향로를 올려놓는 향로석 등을 갖추었다. 묘비는 정조 21년(1797)에 세워진 것으로, 비문은 화유옹주의 남편 황인점(黃仁點, 1740~1802)이 지었다.

영문

Tomb of Lady Jo

This is the tomb of Lady Jo (1707-1780) who was a concubine of King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776), the 21st ruler of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).

Lady Jo joined the palace in 1716. In 1735, she gave birth to the eight daughter of King Yeongjo and received fourth ranking, but their daughter passed away the following year. In 1740, she gave birth to Princess Hwayu (1740-1777) and received second ranking, and in 1778, she ranked first.

Originally, the tomb of Lady Jo was in Jakdong, about 2 km to the west from here. It is said that the original location was located at an auspicious site facing south where the area of the mound was flanked on the side by massive stones, which aided in the understanding of the imposing sizes of royal family tombs at the time and the idea of feng shui. After the 1990s, road construction stretched in this area, so in 2005, it was moved to its current location together with the tomb of Princess Hwayu which was located at the site.

The burial mound is enclosed by low walls and in front of the tomb mound are a tombstone, stone spirit seat, stone table, and a stone incense table. The tombstone was erected in 1797 and its inscription was composed by Hwang In-jeom (1740-1802), the husband of Princess Hwayu.
