국문

금당(金堂)은 불상을 모신 법당으로, 사찰을 구성하는 중심 건물이다. 금색의 불상을 모셨다는 설과 건물 내부를 금색으로 칠했다는 설에서 명칭의 유래를 찾아볼 수 있다. ‘삼국유사’에는 미륵삼존이 나타나자 연못을 메우고 탑과 더불어 금당을 세 곳에 두었다는 기록이 있으며, 발굴조사에서 삼원(三院)의 가람 속에 각각 금당이 있었다는 것이 확인되었다. 이곳은 삼원가람의 중원으로 금당이 있었던 곳이다. 현재 대부분의 석재는 없어졌지만 2층으로 구성된 기단 일부와 남쪽과 북쪽에 계단 흔적이 남아 있다. 기단 내부에 초석은 사라지고 초반석 일부만 남아 있으나, 동원과 서원 금당 터에 있는 초석과 같은 형태였을 것으로 추정한다. 현재 남아 있는 초반석의 위치로 보아 정면 5칸, 측면 4칸의 건물이었을 것으로 보인다.

Main Worship Hall Site of the Center Courtyard - 논의 필요

This is the site of the main worship hall of Mireuksa Temple*. Its name in Korean, Geumdang, means “Hall of Gold,” and refers to the golden light that emanates from the Buddha. It was here that a statue of the Buddha would have been enshrined.

According to the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk yusa), King Mu (r. 600-641) founded a temple with three Geumdang Halls after witnessing a triad of Maitreya, the Future Buddha, arise from a pond. And indeed, the excavation of this site confirmed three worshiping areas (courtyards), each with its own Geumdang Hall.

Excavation of the site revealed that only a small part of the two-tiered base and remains of stairs at the front and back is all that remains of the original structure of the hall. The pillar base stones are missing, but judging from the few remaining 초반석(base stones?**), they were of the same shape as the ones found at the site of the main worship hall of the east courtyard.
