이 불상은 1993년 보림정사의 주지 스님이 보림정사를 세우면서 법당에 봉안한 여래상이다. 원래 이 불상은 1969년에 주지 스님이 스승에게 받아서 모시었던 것이라고 한다. 여래는 ‘진리로부터 진리를 따라서 온 사람’이라는 뜻으로 부처의 덕성을 표현하는 이름 열 가지 중의 하나이다.

불상의 전체 높이는 61cm, 무릎의 너비는 39.5cm이다. 머리와 몸체는 통 소나무를 깎아 만들었고, 무릎 부분에는 은행나무 부재를 덧대었다. 불상의 각진 얼굴과 좁은 어깨, 하반신의 옷자락 표현 양식 등으로 미루어 볼 때에 조각승 진열(進悅)의 작품으로 보인다.
