해설문
국문
탱화란 천이나 종이에 불화를 그려 족자나 액자형태로 만들어 거는 그림을 말한다. 이 탱화는 화엄사 대웅전에 보존되어 있는 그림으로 비로자나불·노사나불·석가모니불 등 삼신불을 그렸다. 전체 3폭으로 되어 있는데, 중앙의 비로자나불탱을 중심으로 왼쪽에는 노사나불탱, 오른쪽에는 석가모니불탱을 각 한 폭씩 그렸다.
길이가 5m를 넘는 거대한 3폭의 화면에 삼신불을 완전히 갖춘 매우 드문 예로, 통도사대광명전삼신불도(보물 제1042호)와 더불어 18세기 삼신불도의 전형을 보여주는 작품이다. 18세기 조계산 지역을 중심으로 활동한 의겸 스님 외 13명의 화원이 동원되어 그린 것으로 선이 섬세하며 녹색을 많이 사용한 것이 특징이다.

Buddhist Painting in Daeungjeon Hall of Hwaeomsa Temple (Buddha Triad)
The three Buddhist paintings in Daeungjeon Hall were painted by the monk Uigyeom and 13 other monk painters in 1757. Each painting is hung behind a statue of the buddha it depicts. In the center is Vairocana Buddha, with Nosana Buddha to the left, and Sakyamuni Buddha to the right. These three buddhas represent the three distinct bodies or aspects of a buddha, known together as Trikaya.
The Vairocana Buddha painting depicts Vairocana in the center with his right hand clasping his left hand, just like the Vairocana statue does. Various figures are depicted around Vairocana, including ten bodhisattvas, ten manifestations of the Buddha, and heavenly beings with masks of lions and elephants on their faces. The Nosana Buddha painting depicts Nosana in the center wearing a headdress and covered with splendid jewels all over his body. Various figures are depicted around Nosana, including two guardian kings, eight bodhisattvas, four manifestations of the Buddha, and guardian deities. The Sakyamuni Buddha painting depicts Sakyamuni in the center surrounded by two guardian kings, six bodhisattvas, ten principle disciples, and guardian deities.
영문 해설 내용
대웅전의 중앙 불단에 걸린 세 점의 그림은 1757년에 의겸 스님과 13명의 화승들이 그린 것이다. 삼신불좌상과 짝을 이루어 각 불상의 뒤에 걸려있으며, 비로자나불을 중심으로 왼쪽과 오른쪽에 각각 석가모니불화와 노사나불화이 걸려있다.
비로나자불화는 중앙에 비로자나불이 불상과 똑같이 오른손으로 왼손을 감싼 모습을 하고 있으며, 주위에는 10대 보살, 10위의 화불, 사자와 코끼리 탈을 쓴 성중들이 배치되어 있다. 노사나불화는 중앙에 보관을 쓰고 온몸을 화려한 구슬로 치장한 노사나불을 그리고, 주위에 2위의 천왕, 8대 보살, 4위의 화불, 신장을 배치하였다. 석가모니불화는 중앙에 석가모니불을 그리고, 주위에 2위의 천왕, 6대 보살, 10대 제자, 신장들을 배치하였다.
