국문

『대혜보각선사서(大慧普覺禪師書)』는 1537년(중종 32)지리산 신흥사에서 개판한 총 116장으로 이루어진 목판본으로, 대혜가 42인의 문인 사대부들에게 간화선법(看話禪法)을 말하며, 사악한 견해를 깨뜨리고 정법의 눈을 열어주기 위해 보낸 편지를 모은 책이다. 권수제 기록을 통해 중국 송나라의 대혜종고(大慧宗杲, 1088-1163)가 남긴 글을 문인 혜연(慧然)이 수집하고 베꼈으며 이를 황문창(黃文昌)이 다시 엮은 것임을 알 수 있다. 대혜보각선사서는 행자수에 따라 11행20자본, 10행17자본, 10행18자본 등의 간본이 있는데, 이번 신청본은 이 가운데 10행17자본이다.

1537년(중종 32)의 지리산 신흥사 간본으로서, 1537년 간본은 이번 신청 건 외에는 아직 확인된 것이 없는 유일한 것으로, 책의 보존 상태도 양호하고 서지학, 불교학, 한국문자론 등 학문적으로도 가치가 있다고 판단된다.

Daehye Bogakseonsaseo (Letters of Master Bogak) of Wonbeobsa Temple, Pohang

Letters of Master Bogak is a book composed of 62 letters written by the Chinese Buddhist monk Dahui (1089-1163), also known in Korea as Master Bogak. The letters are addressed to 42 individuals, including famous representatives of China’s upper-class, Dahui’s disciples, and lay believers. In his letters, Dahui attempts to break evil prejudices and open people’s eyes to the way of Chan (Meditative) Buddhism. The book was compiled and supplemented by Dahui’s disciples, namely Huiran and Huang Wenchang, respectively. In Korea, the book was used throughout the Joseon period (1392-1910) as an essential reading at Buddhist educational institutions.

This copy of Letters of Master Bogak kept at Wonbeopsa Temple was printed with woodblocks in 1537 at Sinheungsa Temple on Jirisan Mountain. The book’s text is arranged in 10 lines per page and 17 characters per line, making it the only copy discovered thus far to have such a layout. The book is in good condition and holds great value in various fields of research, such as Buddhist studies, bibliography, and Korean typography.

영문 해설 내용

『대혜보각선사서』는 송나라의 승려 보각선사 대혜(1089-1163)가 당시의 이름난 사대부들, 제자, 신도 등 총 42명과 주고 받은 62편의 편지글을 모은 것이다. 이 편지들은 모두 사악한 견해를 깨뜨리고 정법의 눈을 열어주기 위해 쓴 것들이다. 제자인 혜연(慧然)이 수집하고 베꼈으며 이를 황문창(黃文昌)이 다시 엮었다. 조선시대에는 사찰의 불교 교육기관에서 학습교재로 널리 사용되었다.

원법사가 소장한 이 책은 1537년 지리산 신흥사에서 간행한 것으로, 목판으로 종이에 인쇄하였다. 본문의 글씨는 한 행에 17자씩, 한 페이지에 10행이 쓰여 있는데, 지금까지 발견된 『대혜보각선사서』 중 이렇게 쓰인 것은 이 책이 유일하다. 책의 보존 상태가 양호하고 서지학, 불교학, 한국문자론 등 다양한 학문 연구에 가치가 있다.
