해설문

국문

삼장 보살(三藏 菩薩)은 천상, 지상, 지하의 교주인 천장, 지지, 지장의 세 보살을 칭하는 말로 조선 시대 수륙재* 관련 신앙에서 비롯된 것이다. 통영 연화도 연화사에 있는 <삼장보살도>는 영조 20년(1744)에 화승 효안(曉岸)이 그린 작품으로, 모두 3점으로 구성되어 있다. 효안은 18세기 전반 경상도 황악산 직지사를 중심으로 활동한 화승(畵僧)이다.

이 <삼장보살도>는 전체적으로 안정된 화면 구성, 양감과 비례를 잘 갖춘 인물 표현 등이 돋보인다. 또한 효안이 같은 해에 그린 ‘고성 옥천사 지장보살도 및 시왕도’와 함께 18세기 전반기 불화의 특징을 잘 나타내고 있다.

Buddhist Paintings of Yeonhwasa Temple on Yeonhwado Island, Tongyeong (Three Bodhisattvas)

These three Buddhist paintings enshrined in Yeonhwasa Temple depict the Three Bodhisattvas, who symbolize the realms of Heaven, Earth, and the Underworld, as well as their retinue. They were painted in 1744 by the monk artisan Hyoan, who was based out of Jikjisa Temple in Gimcheon, Gyeongsang-do Province.

The paintings each feature an overall stable composition, while the expressions of the figures are of good proportion and volume. Created in the same period as Monk Hyoan’s works enshrined at Okcheonsa Temple, Goseong (Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and the Ten Underworld Kings), they demonstrate the characteristics of Buddhist paintings from the first half of the 18th century.

영문 해설 내용

연화사에 소장된 3점의 삼장보살도는 천상, 지상, 지하의 세계를 관장하는 삼장보살과 그 권속들을 표현하였다. 1744년 승려 화가 효안이 그렸으며, 효안은 경상도 김천의 직지사를 중심으로 활동하였다.

세 그림은 전체적으로 안정된 화면 구성, 양감과 비례를 잘 갖춘 인물표현 등이 돋보인다. 효안이 그린 고성 옥천사의 지장보살도 및 시왕도와 같은 시기에 제작된 작품으로, 18세기 전반기 불화의 특징을 잘 나타낸다.
