해설문
국문
백두대간의 주봉인 금대봉 산등성이 아랫부분에 있는 동굴이다. 고생대 오르도비스기＊에 퇴적된 석회암이 지난 수백 년간 빗물과 지하수에 서서히 녹아서 만들어진 석회 동굴로 국내 최고 지대에 있으며, 내부가 매우 아름답다.
총길이는 약 840m로 동굴 내부에는 동굴 산호, 종유석, 석순, 유석, 커튼 등이 많고, 폭 50m, 길이 130m, 높이 30m 의 대형 광장이 있어 신비롭고 아름다운 경치를 볼 수 있다.
또한 긴다리장님좀딱정벌레, 긴다리장님좀먼지벌레, 살아 있는 화석이라 불리는 옛새우 등을 비롯한 6종류의 동굴생물이 발견되어 전 세계 동물학회와 곤충학회의 주목을 받았다. 이러한 가치를 인정받아 강원도 기념물로 지정되었다.
용연굴과 관련하여 여러 이야기가 전해진다. 선조 25년(1592) 당시 수많은 의병들이 모이는 본부 역할을 하였다고도 전해지고, 유배된 사람이 동굴 안에서 일생을 마치면서 유서를 남겨 놓았다는 이야기도 전해지고 있으며, 국가에 변란이 있을 때마다 피난처로 이용되었다고도 전해진다.
한편 1980년대 말 석탄 산업이 사양길로 접어들면서 지역 대체 산업으로 관광 개발의 필요성이 제기되었다. 이에 탄광 지역 진흥 사업이 진행되면서 1993년 4월부터 용연굴의 개발이 시작되었으며, 1997년 9월 개방 시설이 완공되었다.
영문
Yongyeongul Cave is a solutional cave located in Geumdaebong Mountain. It has the highest elevation of all such caves in Korea. Limestones deposited during the Ordovician Period (488.3 to 443.7 million years ago) were slowly melted by rain and underground water to form this beautiful cave.
This 840 m-long cave is adorned with various formations such as cave corals, stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and curtains. Inside this cave, a huge chamber, measuring 50 m in width, 130 m in length, and 30 m in height, creates a mystical, fascinating scene. Also, six kinds of cave-dwelling animals, including various rare beetles and subterranean crustacea considered to be living fossils, were found in this cave, attracting considerable academic attention from all over the world. In recognition of these characteristics and values, Yongyeongul was designated as a provincial monument of Gangwon-do in 1980 and was opened to the public in 1997.
There are various stories related to this cave in Korean history. It is said that the cave was used as a headquarters by civilian armies during the Japanese invasions in 1592, and was also used as a refuge during many national disturbances. Some exiles are believed to have left their last will in this cave at the end of their lives.
