국문

충절사는 이명성(李明誠)과 이명덕(李明德) 형제의 충절을 기리기 위해 1490년(성종 21)에 세운 서원이다.

이명성은 조선이 건국되자 고려 왕조에 절의를 지키고자 벼슬을 마다하고 두문동*에 은거한 72인 중 한 명이다. 이명덕은 조선 건국 이후 나라의 기틀을 잡는 데 일생을 바쳤다. 1396년(태조 5) 과거에 급제한 뒤 태조부터 세종까지 4명의 왕을 모시며 여러 관직을 거쳤다.

원래 충절사는 연기군 명탄**에 처음 세워졌으나 임진왜란 때 소실되었다고 한다. 1851년(철종 2) 지금의 월송동에 다시 세웠고, 이후 강당 등을 지어 서원의 형태를 갖추었다. 1871년(고종 8) 서원 철폐령으로 문을 받았다가 1956년 현재의 사당과 삼문을 다시 세웠다. 1959년 이명성과 이명덕의 위패***를 모셨으며 강당은 1998년에 다시 세웠다. 사당 뒤편에 이명덕의 묘가 있으며, 충절사에서 매년 봄과 가을에 제사를 올리고 있다.

Chungjeolsa Shrine

Chungjeolsa Shrine was established in 1490 to venerate the brothers Yi Myeong-seong and Yi Myeong-deok, who lived at the turn of the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods.

Yi Myeong-seong was one of the 72 civil officials who, after the fall of Goryeo, refused to serve the new dynasty, resigning from their posts and living in seclusion in Dumundong Valley (located in today’s Gwangdeoksan Mountain in Hwanghaebuk-do Province, North Korea). His younger brother Yi Myeong-deok passed the state examination in 1396, served various official posts, and devoted his life to laying the foundation of the newly established country.

The shrine was established in Myeongtan (today’s Yeongdae-ri Village in Sejong City). It was destroyed during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598 and rebuilt at its current location in 1851. Later, the shrine was expanded to serve as a Confucian academy and with a lecture hall. However, in 1871 it was demolished when most shrines and Confucian academies were shut down by a nationwide decree. In 1956, the current shrine building and gate were built anew. In 1959, the spirit tablets of Yi Myeong-seong and Yi Myeong-deok were enshrined here again. The lecture hall was rebuilt in 1998. The tomb of Yi Myeong-deok is located behind the shrine. A veneration ritual is performed biannually in spring and autumn.
