해설문

국문

대성여자중학교 강당은 청주대학교의 강당으로 사용하기 위해 1954년에 지은 건물이다. 신축 당시에는 청주 시내에 이처럼 넓은 공간의 건물이 부족했기 때문에 예식장으로도 사용되었다.

건물은 동서 방향으로 긴 장방형이며 붉은 벽돌을 쌓았고 기와지붕을 올렸다. 서쪽 방향에 현관을 내어 주 출입구를 만들었으며, 주 출입구에는 마감재와 대비되는 흰색의 캐노피*를 설치하였다. 현관에는 터스칸 오더**로 꾸민 기둥을 두고 두 개의 아치를 세웠다. 건물의 측면에는 단상으로 이어지는 부출입구를 두었다.

이 강당은 광복 후 독자적인 근대화를 모색하는 시기에 지은 학교 건축의 초기 사례로, 당시 학교 건축의 기술적 특성을 잘 보여준다.

2005년 4월 내·외부를 새롭게 단장하였으며, 2007년 9월 21일 국가등록문화재로 지정되었다. 현재는 교내 행사와 대성여자중학교 탁구부 훈련 등 다양한 목적으로 이용되고 있다.

Auditorium of Daeseong Girls’ Middle School, Cheongju

This building was constructed in 1954 to be used as the auditorium of Cheongju University, which was founded in the vicinity in 1947. In 1959, two years after Cheongju University was relocated to Naedeok-dong, Daeseong Girls’ Middle School was established on the university’s former site. Since then, the building has been used as the middle school’s auditorium. In the past, it was also used as a wedding hall, as there were few spacious buildings in Cheongju’s downtown.

This auditorium is an early and representative example of school architecture built during the dynamic period of modernization in the mid-20th century. The red brick building with tile roof has a long rectangular shape and is oriented on an east-west axis. The large entrance canopy, situated at the building’s western end, is comprised of two arches to the front, with a Tuscan order pillar in between them, and one arch to each side. The building features contrasting decorative white accents on the entrance canopy and windows. There is also an auxiliary entrance in the rear left of the building which leads to the auditorium’s stage.

In April 2005, the interior and exterior were newly remodeled, and in 2007, the building was listed as National Registered Cultural Heritage. Currently, it is used for various purposes such as school events and ping-pong club practice.

영문 해설 내용

이 건물은 1947년 이 일대에 개교한 청주대학교에서 강당으로 사용하기 위해 1954년에 지었다. 청주대학교가 내덕동으로 이전한지 2년 뒤인 1959년 이곳에는 대성여자중학교가 설립되었고, 이후 이 건물은 대성여자중학교의 강당으로 사용되었다. 당시에는 청주 시내에 넓은 공간의 건물이 부족했기 때문에 이 강당이 예식장으로 사용되기도 하였다.

이 강당은 20세기 중반 근대화를 모색하는 시기에 지은 학교 건축의 초기 사례로, 당시 학교 건축의 특징을 잘 보여준다. 건물은 붉은 벽돌로 쌓았고 기와지붕을 올렸으며, 동서 방향으로 긴 장방형이다. 서쪽 끝에는 커다란 캐노피를 설치한 입구가 있는데, 앞면에는 투스칸 오더로 꾸민 기둥을 두고 양옆에 두 개의 아치를 세웠고 옆면에는 한 개의 아치를 세웠다. 현관 캐노피와 창문에는 마감재와 대비되는 흰색을 칠했다. 건물의 왼쪽 끝에는 단상으로 이어지는 부출입구를 두었다.
