해설문

국문

서장대는 진주성 서쪽의 지휘 장대이다. 『여지도서(輿地圖書)』*에는 ‘누의 이름은 회룡루(回龍樓)이고 다락집’이라고 기록되어 있다.

지금의 서장대는 허물어져 흔적만 남아 있던 것을 1934년 진주의 서상필(徐相弼)이 다시 지은 것이다.

Western Command Post of Jinjuseong Fortress

A command post, called jangdae in Korean, was the center from which a military commander would direct soldiers during military drills and war. There are two remaining command posts in Jinjuseong Fortress: one in the north and one in the west.

The western command post of Jinjuseong Fortress commands a good view of the Namgang River and faces Mangjinsan Mountain, which has a beacon station atop it, suggesting that it had served as a strategic military base. It is unknown exactly when it was first built, and the original building itself had long been demolished. In 1934, Seo Sang-pil (1892-1955), a benefactor of the Jinju area, gave his assets to build the current building. According to historical records, the building which stood here was originally named Hoeryongnu, meaning “Pavilion of the Revolving Dragon.”

영문 해설 내용

장대는 전쟁 또는 군사훈련 시에 대장이 성 안의 군사들을 지휘하기 위한 곳이다. 진주성에는 북장대와 서장대 두 곳이 남아 있다.

진주성 서장대는 남강이 잘 내려다보이고 정면으로는 봉수대가 있는 망진산을 조망할 수 있는 자리에 세워져 있어 군사 요충지로서의 역할을 했을 것으로 보인다. 언제 처음 세워졌는지는 알 수 없고, 허물어져 터만 남아 있었는데, 1934년 진주 지역의 독지가였던 서상필(1892-1955)이 사재를 들여 지금의 건물을 지었다. 기록에 의하면 원래 이곳에 있던 누각의 이름은 회룡루이다.
