국문

방선문 계곡은 제주도에서 긴 하천의 하나인 한천(漢川) 중류에 위치한 계곡이다. 방선문은 ‘신선이 사는 곳으로 들어가는 문’이라는 뜻으로 영주 10경 중의 하나인 영구춘화(瀛丘春花)의 장소로 알려진 명승지이다.

방선문은 거대하고 특이한 암석과 주변에 구실잣밤나무, 종가시나무 등의 상록활엽수종들과 예덕나무 등의 낙엽활엽수종들이 한천 수계와 어우러져 자연경관이 뛰어난 곳으로서, 과거에는 조선시대 최익현의 ‘한라산기’에 등장하고, 조선시대에 제주목사 일행 등이 와서 풍류를 즐겼던 곳이다. 지금도 이들이 큰 암석에 새긴 각자들이 남아 있어 자연경관과 역사문화경관이 함축된 문화적 명소로 국가 명승으로서 가치가 인정되었다.

Bangseonmun Natural Arch, Jeju

This arch-shaped rock formation is located in the valley of Hancheon Stream, which originates at Baengnokdam Crater Lake near the top of Hallasan Mountain and flows into the sea in the northern part of the island. The name of this rock formation, Bangseongmun, means “Gate to the Land of the Immortals.” It is regarded as one of the ten famous scenic sites of Jejudo Island.

Enormous rocks of unusual shapes are surrounded by a variety of evergreen and deciduous broad-leaf trees. During the Joseon period (1392-1910), many of Jeju’s local magistrates and government officials visited this place to find inspiration and carved inscriptions on the rocks, which can still be seen today. In 2013, this place was designed as a scenic site in recognition of its natural beauty and historical significance.

영문 해설 내용

방선문은 큰 아치형 바위로, 한라산 백록담에서 발원하여 제주도 북쪽 바다로 흘러가는 하천인 한천 중류에 위치한 계곡에 있다. 방선문은 ‘신선이 사는 곳으로 들어가는 문’이라는 뜻이며, 제주도의 10대 절경 중 하나로 손꼽히는 명승지이다.

거대하고 특이한 암석과 주변에 각종 상록활엽수들과 낙엽활엽수들이 한천 수계와 어우러져 자연경관이 뛰어나다. 예로부터 조선시대 제주 목사 등 관료 일행들이 즐겨 찾았던 곳이며, 지금도 이들이 큰 암석에 새긴 각자들이 남아 있다. 자연경관과 역사문화경관이 함축된 곳이라는 가치를 인정 받아 2013년 명승으로 지정되었다.
