Sumanotap Pagoda of Jeongamsa Temple, Jeongseon

This seven-story stone pagoda is said to have been built by the eminent monk Jajang (590-658) to enshrine the relics of Sakyamuni Buddha which he obtained in China.

The name of the pagoda means “pagoda made of green stone from the Dragon King’s palace” and is from a legend about Jajang. According to this legend, on his way home from China, Jajang met the Dragon King in the West Sea. The king presented Jajang with a piece of rock asking to build a pagoda out of it. Jajang fulfilled his promise by building this pagoda and enshrining the Buddha’s relics in it.

This pagoda is made of grey-green dolomite stone bricks and consists of a six-tiered base, seven stories with a roof atop each story, and a bronze decorative top. Also, there are wind chimes hung from each corner of the roof sections and the decorative top. This is the only stone brick pagoda in Korea with all these features in their original condition. On the southern side of the first floor, there is a door that leads to a niche shrine which contains the Buddha’s relics. The pagoda measures 9 m in height and 3.04 m in width.

In 1972, five memorial stones and a reliquary were found inside the pagoda when it was disassembled for renovation. According to the memorial stones, the pagoda underwent several repairs in the 18th-19th centuries, which involved a number of temples and over 120 monks. In 1995, the pagoda was disassembled and renovated once more.
