Tomb of Seol Chong (Presumed)

This tomb is said to belong to Seol Chong, one of the three literary giants of the Silla period (57 BCE-935 CE) and one of the ten sages of Silla commonly honored at Confucian shrines.

Seol Chong’s father was the renowned Buddhist monk Wonhyo (617-686) and his mother was Princess Yoseok, the daughter of King Muyeol (r. 654-661). He is said to have been born between the years 654 and 660, but it is unknown when he died. During the reign of King Sinmun (r. 681-692), he was made headmaster of the National Confucian College together with Kang Su. He greatly contributed to the translation and interpretation of Chinese texts into the Korean language through the use of the Idu writing system. He also wrote Admonition to the King of Flowers (Hwawanggye), an allegory about the importance of moral cultivation.

Around the bottom of the burial mound, traces of base stones can be seen. In front of the tomb is a stone table and tombstone erected by Seol Chong’s descendants, the Sunchang Seol Clan.
