해설문

국문

수정사 대광전(大光殿)에 안치되어있는 삼존불좌상은 가운데에 본존인 석가불상(釋迦佛像)을 중심으로 왼쪽에 미륵보살좌상(彌勒菩薩坐像), 오른쪽에 제화갈라보살상(提和竭羅菩薩像)이 있는 석조수기삼존불(石造 授記三尊佛)* 형식이다. 17세기 말 경주를 중심으로 활동한 승호파(勝湖派)의 조각 양식을 보이며, 만들 당시의 기록은 발견되지 않았다.

양쪽의 미륵보살상(높이 72cm)과 제화갈라보살상(높이 71cm)의 법의는 보살상임에도 불구하고 석가불과 거의 동일한 통견의(通肩衣)***에 통통한 얼굴 형태와 이목구비의 표현, 얼굴에 번져나간 미소 등이 마치 목조불상 조각과 같이 섬세하게 조각되어 조형적인 면에서도 솜씨가 돋보이는 수작으로 학술적, 예술적 가치를 지니고 있다.

영문

Stone Seated Amitabha Buddha Triad of Sujeongsa Temple, Uiseong

This Buddhist triad consists of Amitabha (Buddha of the Western Paradise) in the center with Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva of Great Compassion) and Mahasthamaprapta (Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Strength) to each side. It is believed that all beings who call the name of Amitabha while reflecting on his meritorious virtues can be reborn in the Buddhist paradise of the West.

It is unknown when or by whom the statues were made, but they resemble the style of the monk artisan Seungho, who was active in the Gyeongsang-do region in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Though the statues are made of zeolite sourced from Gyeongju, their plump faces, facial expressions, and wide smiles were carved with great detail as if they were made of wood, attesting to the artist’s refined craftsmanship.

영문 해설 내용

이 삼존불은 아미타여래를 중심으로 양옆의 관세음보살과 대세지보살로 이루어져 있다. 아미타여래는 극락정토의 부처로, 아미타여래의 공덕을 기리고 그의 이름을 염(念)하는 모든 중생들은 극락세계에 왕생할 수 있다고 여겨진다.

세 불상 모두 언제 만들어졌는지는 알려지지 않았으나, 17세기 말부터 18세기 초까지 경상도 지역을 중심으로 활동한 승려 조각가 승호의 조각 양식을 보인다. 경주에서 나오는 불석을 사용해 만들었지만, 통통한 얼굴 형태와 이목구비의 표현, 얼굴에 번져나간 미소 등이 마치 목조 불상과 같이 섬세하게 조각되어 조형적인 면에서도 솜씨가 돋보이는 수작이다.
