해설문

국문

영천 은해사 운부암 금동보살좌상은 조선 초기에 제작된 아담하면서도 화려한 불상이다. 안정된 자세, 올라간 긴 눈꼬리, 갸름한 얼굴, 장엄하고 화려한 구슬 장식 등에서 고려 말의 전통적인 보살상 양식을 엿볼 수 있다. 크기, 형태, 장식 면에서 태조 4년(1395)에 만들어진 영덕 장륙사 건칠관음보살좌상, 15세기 후반에 제작된 것으로 추정되는 문경 대승사 금동관음보살좌상 및 상주 갑장사의 금동보살좌상과 유사해 경북 지역의 지방색이 드러난다는 평가를 받는다. 목에 있는 띠 주름인 삼도(三道), 가슴 아래에 띠로 묶은 듯 표현한 내의(內衣), 대칭을 이루며 양다리에 흘러내린 옷 주름 등으로 보아 장륙사의 보살상보다는 이후 시기에, 대승사나 갑장사의 보살상보다는 이전 시기에 제작된 것으로 보인다.

Gilt-bronze Seated Bodhisattva at Unbuam Hermitage of Eunhaesa Temple, Yeongcheon

The gilt-bronze statue enshrined in Unbuam Hermitage depicts a seated bodhisattva and is presumed to have been made in the early period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). Though relatively small, measuring 1 m in height, it features a particularly elegant and elaborate design.

The bodhisattva is depicted wearing a headdress adorned with flame designs and images of mythical kalavinka birds, which dwell in the Buddhist paradise of the West. The statue has a stable, well-balanced appearance, though the head is disproportionately large compared to the torso. The bodhisattva has a round face, upwardly slanting eyes, and adornments all over his body. The well-balanced shape, elaborate decorations, and symmetrical folds on the robe are common features of the Buddhist statues of the early Joseon period.

영문 해설 내용

운부암에 모셔져 있는 이 보살상은 조선 초기에 제작된 것으로 추정된다. 높이 약 1m로 아담하면서도 매우 화려하다.

머리에는 불꽃 문양과 극락정토에 산다는 새인 극락조 등으로 장식된 화려한 보관을 쓰고 있다. 머리가 몸에 비해 다소 큰 편이지만, 전체적인 균형이 잘 맞고, 신체 표현에 굴곡이 없어 안정감이 있다. 얼굴은 갸름하고, 눈꼬리가 약간 올라갔으며, 온몸에 화려한 구슬 장식을 둘렀다. 안정된 자세, 화려한 장식, 양 다리에 대칭으로 흘러내린 옷주름 등은 조선 초기 보살상의 전형적인 양식이다.
