해설문

국문

향나무는 우리나라 중부 이남을 비롯해 울릉도와 일본 등에 분포하고 있으며 상나무·노송나무로도 불린다. 이 나무는 강한 향기를 지니고 있어 제사 때 향을 피우는 용도로 쓰이며, 정원수·공원수로 많이 심는다.

통구미의 향나무는 울릉도 남양리의 마을 뒤 험한 암벽 틈에서 자라고 있다. 향나무는 울릉도의 대표적인 나무로 예전에는 크고 오래된 나무가 많이 있었으나 사람들이 함부로 베어가서 통구미 자생지는 물론 섬 전체에서 큰 나무를 찾아보기 어렵다.

통구미의 향나무 자생지는 향나무의 원종(原種)이 자생하고 있는 곳으로 학술적으로 매우 중요시 되고 있으며, 특수한 환경에 적응된 유전자원으로서의 가치가 높아 사람들에 의한 무분별한 훼손을 막고자 천연기념물로 지정·보호하고 있다.

영문

Chinese junipers (Juniperus chinensis L.) can be found in the southern part of Korea, as well as in Ulleungdo Island, Japan, and other places. They have a strong scent and are therefore used as incense in ancestral rituals and commonly planted in gardens and parks. Many large and old Chinese junipers used to be found across Ulleungdo, but because many people recklessly cut them down, today it is difficult to find large Chinese junipers anywhere on the island.

This tree habitat is located on a rugged cliff face behind a village in Namyang-ri. This site is of academic importance because it contains the foundation stock of Chinese junipers, which show genetic adaptations to the unique Ulleungdo environment. For this reason, it was designated as a natural monument to protect it from thoughtless destruction by humans.
