해설문

국문

목조삼전패는 대웅전 삼존불상 좌우와 사이에 있는 세 점의 나무패이다. 17세기 조선 인조(1623~1649 재위) 때에 제작된 것으로, 2m 넘는 대작이며, 패의 뒷면에 제작과 수리 연대가 적혀 있다.

일반적으로 불보살의 명칭을 적은 불패들과 달리 앞면에 각각 왕, 왕비, 세자의 만수무강을 기원하는 글씨가 있기 때문에 삼전패라고 한다. 연꽃과 구름, 왕을 상징하는 용무늬로 화려하게 장식하고 조각이 정교하여 불교 미술의 극치를 보여준다.

조성된 연대와 수리한 연대를 알 수 있어 불교 목공예의 시기를 정하는 데 기준이 되는 중요한 작품이다.

Wooden Royal Tablets of Songgwangsa Temple

A wooden royal tablet (jeonpae) was a symbolic object that represented the king or other members of the royal family. Such tablets were commonly enshrined in local government offices and Buddhist temples to recognize royal authority and pray for the wellbeing of the royal family.

These three wooden royal tablets enshrined alongside the Buddha triad in Daeungjeon Hall of Songgwangsa Temple were made in the 1640s to wish for the health and longevity of King Injo (r. 1623-1649), Queen Consort Jangnyeol (1624-1688), and Crown Prince Sohyeon (1612-1645) of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). Well-preserved in their original state, their craftsmanship demonstrates the height of Buddhist art. They are also the largest extant wooden royal tablets among those enshrined with a Buddha triad.

The king’s tablet is placed in the center, with the tablets of the queen consort and crown prince on the right and left, respectively. The king’s tablet is slightly taller, measuring 2.3 m in height, whereas the others measure 2.1 m in height. The tablets are ornately adorned with various designs depicting lotus flowers, clouds, and dragons which symbolize the king. According to an inscription on the back of the crown prince’s tablet, all three tablets were repaired in 1792.

영문 해설 내용

전패는 왕과 왕실의 인물들을 상징하는 나무 패이다. 전패는 보통 왕권을 나타내고 왕실의 안녕을 기원하기 위해 지방 관청과 사찰에 모셨다.

송광사 대웅전에 삼존불과 함께 모셔져 있는 삼전패는 조선 인조(재위 1623-1649), 장렬왕후(1624-1688), 소현세자(1612-1645)의 만수무강을 기원하기 위해 1640년대에 제작되었다. 원형을 잘 보존하고 있으며 조각이 정교하여 불교 미술의 극치를 보여준다. 또한 현전하는 삼전패 가운데 가장 규모가 크다.

가운데의 전패가 왕의 것이고 왼쪽과 오른쪽은 각각 세자와 왕비의 것이다. 왕의 전패가 높이 2.3m로 높이 2.1m인 다른 두 전패에 비해 약간 크다. 삼전패는 연꽃, 구름, 왕을 상징하는 용무늬로 화려하게 장식되어 있다. 세자의 전패 뒷면에는 세 전패를 1792년에 수리했다는 글씨가 적혀 있다.
