Okbyeongseowon Confucian Academy

Confucian academies, called seowon in Korean, are private education institutions of the Joseon period (1392-1910) which usually combined the functions of a Confucian shrine and a lecture hall.

This Confucian academy was established in 1658 to honor the scholar Bak Sun (1523-1589), who was born in Pocheon. Bak Sun placed first in the state examination in 1553 and was promoted to the highest government position, chief state councilor, in 1572. In his later years, he returned to his hometown to enjoy its beautiful scenery and spent his time educating his students.

In 1698, the spirit tablets of Yi Ui-geon (1533-1621) and Kim Su-hang (1629-1689) were additionally enshrined. In 1713, the academy was royally chartered and King Sukjong (r. 1674-1720) bestowed the name Okbyeong, meaning “jade screen.” The academy was demolished in the late 19th century when most shrines and Confucian academies were shut down by a nationwide decree. At this time, the spirit tablets were buried underground, and the memorial rituals were held at an altar instead. In 1926, three more scholars were additionally enshrined.

The shrine area of the academy was reconstructed in 1981. Currently, it consists of a red spiked gate that marks the entrance to a sacred place, inner gate, two auxiliary shrines, and a main shrine called Sunghyeongak. The lecture hall area was not rebuilt. In front of the academy, there is the stele of Bak Sun erected in 1909. The inscription had been composed by Song Si-yeol (1607-1689), a renowned scholar and high-ranking official.
