해설문

국문

예산 이성만형제 효제비는 고려 시대의 인물인 이성만(李成萬), 이순(李順) 형제의 효행과 우애를 기리기 위해 1497년(연산군 3)에 세운 비석이다.

이성만과 이순 형제는 지극한 효성으로 이름이 높았다. 부모님이 살아 계실 때는 맛있는 음식으로 받들어 모셨으며, 돌아가신 뒤에는 형이 어머니의 묘를 지키고, 아우가 아버지의 묘를 지켰다. 삼년상을 마친 뒤에는 아침에는 형이 아우의 집으로 가고, 저녁에는 아우가 형의 집을 찾았으며, 한 가지 음식이 생겨도 서로 만나지 않으면 먹지 않을 정도로 효심과 우애가 깊었다고 한다.

효제비는 길쭉한 몸돌 위에 머릿돌을 얹은 모습이며, 밑에 있는 받침돌은 후대에 와서 만든 것이다. 몸돌에 새겨진 비문에는 왕이 형제를 기려 상을 내린 사실과 후손에게 모범이 되도록 명하였다는 내용이 기록되어 있다.

Commemorative Stele for the Filial Devotion of the Yi Brothers

This stele was erected in 1497 during the Joseon period (1392-1910) to commemorate the filial devotion and brotherly love of the brothers Yi Seong-man and Yi Sun, who lived during the Goryeo period (918-1392).

Yi Seong-man and Yi Sun were known for their extraordinary filial devotion. They served their parents with delicious meals while their parents were alive, and after their parents passed away, Yi Seong-man guarded their mother’s tomb, and Yi Sun guarded their father’s tomb. After they completed the required three-year mourning period, it is said that Yi Seong-man visited Yi Sun in the mornings, and Yi Sun visited Yi Seong-man in the evenings. They would not eat even when there was delicious food unless they ate together, which shows their strong filial devotion and brotherly love.

The stele consists of a tall and narrow body stone with an inscription, a capstone, and a pedestal that is presumed to have been made at a later time. The inscription records that the king bestowed this commemoration in their honor and ordered that their descendants follow their example.
