해설문
국문
시암고택은 임진왜란 때 영해서 의병장을 했던 난고 남경훈(蘭皐 南慶熏)의 9대손 시암 남고(時庵 南皐)가 난고 종가에서 따로 나오면서 살게 된 집이다.
시암고택은 몸채와 대문의 양쪽에 이어서 지은 행랑이 서로 연결된 口자형 평면이고, 집 뒤편에 사당이 있다. 몸채는 가운데 대청이, 양옆으로는 방이 있다. 사랑채를 따로 짓지 않고, 행랑 오른쪽 부분에 사랑방이 있고, 사랑방 앞에는 마루를 놓았다. 1959년 태풍 사라로 크게 부서진 것을 손보아 고쳤다.
시암고택은 19세기 영해 지역의 건축 특색을 지니고 있어 문화재적 가치가 있다.
영문
Siam House, Yeongdeok
This house was first established by Nam Jin-man (1697-1773), a scholar of the Joseon period (1392-1910). His descendants sold the house to Nam Go (1807-1879, pen name: Siam), one of their relatives. Nam Go is a 9th-generation descendant of Nam Gyeong-hun (1572-1612), who took part in a local civilian army during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. He bought this house after he got married and needed to move out of his parent’s home.
The house consists of a servants’ quarters at the front and a main quarters at the back, which together form a square layout with a courtyard in the center. The main gate is situated in the center of the servants’ quarters. There is no separate men’s quarters building, but a room with a veranda for the men of the house is located at the front right corner of the house where the servants’ quarters and main quarters meet. The main quarters has a wooden-floored hall in the center with an underfloor-heated room to either side. Behind the main quarters is the family shrine.
In 1959, the house was heavily damaged due to Typhoon Sarah and was repaired afterward.
영문 해설 내용
이 집은 조선시대의 학자인 남진만(1697-1773)이 처음 지었다. 이후 그의 후손이 친척인 남고(1807-1879, 호: 시암)에게 매각하였다. 남고는 임진왜란 당시 영덕 지방에서 의병 활동을 했던 남경훈(1572-1612)의 9대손으로, 혼인하여 분가하면서 이 집을 구매하였다.
이 집은 몸채와 대문의 양쪽에 이어서 지은 행랑이 서로 연결되어 ㅁ자형 평면을 이루고 있다. 사랑채를 따로 짓지 않고, 행랑과 몸채가 만나는 오른쪽 부분에 사랑방을 두었다. 몸채는 가운데 대청을 두고 양옆에 방을 두었다. 몸채 뒤편에는 사당이 있다.
1959년 태풍 사라로 크게 피해를 입은 뒤 보수하였다.
