국문
삼장보살도는 천상을 담당하는 천장보살(天藏菩薩), 지상을 담당하는 지지보살(持地菩薩), 지하를 담당하는 지장보살(地藏菩薩)로 이루어진 삼장 보살과 그 권속을 그린 불화이다.
이 불화는 영조 17년(1741)에 긍척(亘陟)을 비롯하여 당대 최고의 화승으로 명성이 높았던 의겸(義謙)의 제자들이 그렸다. 3위 보살을 한 화면에 배치하는 것이 삼장 보살도의 일반적인 형태이나, 이 작품은 천장 보살과 지지 보살을 한 화면에 담고 지장보살은 분리하여 따로 그린 독특한 구성을 보인다.
흥국사 삼장보살도는 국내에 남아 있는 삼장 보살도 중에서 제작 시기가 비교적 이르고 작품도 우수하다. 의겸의 화풍이 제자를 통해 후대로 전승되고 있음을 살필 수 있다는 점에서 학술적으로도 가치가 높다.

Buddhist Painting of Heungguksa Temple, Yeosu (Three Bodhisattvas)
These paintings depict three bodhisattvas and their retinue. They were painted in 1741 by the painter-monk Geungcheok and other disciples of Uigyeom, the most renowned painter-monk of the 18th century. This kind of bodhisattva triad painting is only found in Korea and symbolizes the triad of heaven, earth, and the underworld.
Generally, this triad, consiting of Ksitigarbha, the Heavenly Bodhisattva, and the Earthly Bodhisattva, is depicted together in a single painting. This work has a unique composition in which the triad is spread across two paintings, one depicting Ksitigarbha and the other depicting the Heavenly Bodhisattva and the Earthly Bodhisattva.
Among the extant paintings of the Three Bodhisattvas, it is a relatively early and high-quality work. Also, it has high academic value in that it provides insight into the artistic style of Uigyeom which was continued by his disciples.
영문 해설 내용
삼장보살과 그 권속들을 그린 불화이다. 1741년 긍척을 비롯하여, 당대 최고의 화승으로 명성이 높았던 의겸의 제자들이 그렸다. 삼장보살은 각각 천상, 지상, 지하의 세계를 관장하며, 삼장보살을 그린 그림은 한국에서만 발견된다.
삼장보살도는 일반적으로 지장보살, 천장보살, 지지보살을 한 화면에 배치하는데, 이 작품은 천장보살과 지지보살을 한 화면에 담고 지장보살은 분리하여 따로 그린 톡특한 구성을 보인다.
