이 불화는 서방 극락세계에서 망자의 극락왕생을 이끄는 아미타불의 설법 모임을 그린 불화이다. 아미타불은 청색 연꽃으로 꾸민 대좌 위에 아미타구품인*의 손동작을 하고 앉아 있으며 아래쪽 좌우에는 반가좌를 한 관음보살과 대세지보살이 있다. 그 주위를 십대제자, 사천왕, 용왕과 용녀 등이 함께 극락세계를 드러내고 있다. 십대제자의 움직임과 표정이 자연스럽고, 안정된 구도, 세밀한 필선, 화려하고 적절한 장식이 돋보인다.
화기에 의하면 이 불화는 1880년 3월에 상궁과 일반인들의 시주로 모아서 조성되었고 청련사의 대법당에 봉안되었다고 한다. 불화를 그린 화승은 한성부(현재의 서울), 경기도 지역에서 활약했던 고산 축연과 동호 진철이다.
- 아미타구품인(阿彌陀九品印): 아미타여래는 설법을 듣는 중생의 능력에 따라 설법의 내용과 방법을 달리하는데 상품상생上品上生부터 하품하생下品下生까지 9단계로 나뉜다. 이때 짓는 손 모양을 구품인이라고 한다.

Buddhist Painting of Cheongnyeonsa Temple, Yangju (Amitabha Buddha)
This painting depicts the scene of Amitabha Buddha’s lecture in the Western Paradise. It is believed that all beings who call the name of Amitabha while reflecting on his meritorious virtues can be reborn in the Buddhist paradise of the West.
The painting is said to have been made in 1880 with funding by the ladies of the royal court and private individuals to be enshrined in main Buddha hall of Cheongnyeonsa Temple. It was painted by the monk artisans Chukyeon and Jincheol, who were active in the capital district (Hanseong-bu) and surrounding Gyeonggi-do region.
Amitabha is depicted seated atop a pedestal in the shape of a blue lotus flower. His hand gesture symbolizes that he is lecturing or preaching. Seated next to the pedestal are Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva of Great Compassion) and Mahasthamaprapta (Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Strength). To each side of this triad are various figures, including the Buddha’s ten principal disciples, the Four Guardian Kings, the dragon king, and the dragon queen. Outstanding features of the painting include its balanced composition, its detailed brushwork, its ornate and appropriate ornamentation, and the sense of movement and expressions of the ten principal disciples.
