Birthplace of Oh Yun-hwan, Sokcho

This house, located in Sangdomun Stone Fence Village along the path to the renowned Seoraksan Mountain, is the birthplace of the Confucian scholar Oh Yun-hwan (1872-1946).

Oh Yun-hwan was a 26th-generation descendant of the Haeju Oh Clan. He was devoted to his parents and was active in the anti-Japanese movement before and during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). He studied and taught the teachings of the renowned scholar Yi I (1537-1584) and kept a daily record of his life from the age of 19 until the day before his death.

It is unknown when this house was first built, but it is presumed to date to the early 19th century. At the time of its designation as a cultural heritage in 2006, the house had several modern features such as sliding glass windows, suggesting that the house had been renovated sometime in the 20th century. The house was in need of repair, so from 2006 to 2007, it was dismantled and reassembled. At this time, traditional windows were newly installed along the facade to better reflect what the house may have originally looked like.

The interior rooms of this house are arranged in two rows and are entirely enclosed in one building, which is the typical layout of traditional houses in Korea's mountainous areas. This layout provides ideal protection from snow and wild animals, enabling the inhabitants to carry on with their daily routine without needing to step outside the house.

The extended roof at the front of the building houses the stable, and the walls of the stable are made with wood planks. There are also additional storage spaces which have been added at the back of the house.

Around 230 m to the southwest of this house near the bank of the Ssancheon Stream is a hexagonal wooden pavilion named Hangmujeong that Oh Yun-hwan built in 1933.
