Dilkusha House, Seoul

This house was built in 1924 by the American journalist and entrepreneur Albert Wilder Taylor (1875-1948) and his wife the English actress Mary Linely Taylor (1889-1982). It is named after a house in the Dilkusha area of Lucknow, India, which had impressed Mrs. Taylor during a visit there. The name means “Palace of Heart's Delight” in Sanskrit.

Albert W. Taylor came to Korea in 1897, following his father who was working at a gold mine in Pyeonganbuk-do Province. From 1919, he also worked as a correspondent for the Associated Press and covered many important events such as King Gojong’s funeral, the March First Independence Movement, the massacre in Jeam-ri Village committed by the Japanese Imperial Army, and many others. In 1942, year after the breakout of the Pacific War (1941-1945), Albert and Mary were deported by the Japanese authorities to the USA. Albert, who always wished to come back to Korea, died in 1948 and was buried at Yanghwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery in Seoul.

The house has two-stories and a basement. It is made of red brick and stands on the granite foundation. The house was severely damaged during a fire in 1926 but was reconstructed in 1930. After the deportation of Albert and Mary Taylor, the house changed its owner and at some point was even used as a multi-family house, which is why its original layout was changed. The identity of the house was only rediscovered in 2006 when Albert and Mary’s son Bruce Taylor (1919-2015) visited Korea to find the house he grew up in. The restoration of the house started in 2016, and in 2020, Dilkusha House was opened to the public.
